November 2024 - Seniors Workshop Series (FULL)

Cell Phone Photography | Wednesday, November 20, 2024 | 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Ready to capture special moments with your smartphone? Join us for a hands-on seminar taught by Peter Ferguson. Peter will start by showcasing examples of portraits, travel photos, and general scenery to inspire you. Then, he will guide you through apps, settings, and sharing options step by step, using live images from his phone to demonstrate each feature. This seminar is perfect for beginners or anyone looking to refine their skills. Gain confidence and start capturing beautiful memories today!

October 2024 - Seniors Workshop Series 

Eat Well for Life | Wednesday, October 16, 2024 | 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Join Christina Dupont, a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator, to enhance your nutrition knowledge and meal planning skills. In the workshop, you will create a two day meal plan, while learning about the basics of meal planning, how to read a food label and the nutritional needs for seniors. Attendees are encouraged to bring their favourite recipe, recipe book, or a tablet where they can look up recipes as we complete the activity.

 

September 2024 - Seniors Workshop Series 

Strategies for Aging Well | Tuesday, September 17, 2024 | 2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

If you are thinking of downsizing or making life changes, this workshop is the perfect opportunity for you! Led by The Professional Referral Group of Niagara (PRG), have the opportunity to learn from and engage with Heather Lane from Revel Real Estate, Lance Wiebe a certified financial planner with Desjardin Financial, Sandy and Hugh Graham from the Mortgage Centre, Sabrina from Season’s Welland, Seniors on the Move, Teide Zimmerman from Pleasantview Memorial and Cassandra Best from the Pelham Library.

As Pelham Cares celebrates its 41st anniversary this year, join us to learn more about this vital part of our community. Learn about the organization's history, how services have grown, and what the future holds. Participants will get a "behind-the-scenes" look from Pelham Cares Board of Directors President Greg Lewis, and the workshop will include an opportunity for attendees to get "hands-on" by assembling a food hamper.

Help support by bringing a donation of one of the most needed items. Items in need include mayonnaise, oil, canned meats, jams, cleaners and almond milk.

Miracles in Motion Fitness | Tuesday, September 10th & 11th, 2024 | 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. & 3:45 p.m. - 4:45 p.m.

Anne Cooke is a senior fitness instructor, trainer, and educator of senior fitness instructors. Former business owner and fitness director of corporate programs in Toronto and private coach to executives and wealthy. Join Anne Cooke for an active movement session and review daily movement mechanics outside of the structures of the class, gym or sport. Learn why the way we move matters and add some new movement patterns that aid in managing conditions and prevention of nuisance injuries. Using some fun tools like sticks, stability cushions and poles it will be a fun and educational workshop! Participate or spectate. Chairs are provided. All welcome.

June 2024 - Seniors Workshop Series 

Art and You | Wednesday, June 26, 2024 | 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. or 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Engage in painting watercolour blooms with Shauna Daley from Art and You Inc. Each bloom tells a unique story, reflecting the spontaneous and unpredictable nature of watercolours. Seniors will engage hands-on, experimenting with various techniques to create their own stunning blooms, celebrating the harmony and elegance found in natural forms.

 

May 2024 - Seniors Workshop Series 

Senior Bike Safety | Wednesday, May 15, 2024 | 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Learn how to adopt safe cycling for seniors while you explore cycling from a driver's perspective. Learn best practices for cycling from Dave Hunt, the founder of Bike Niagara, an organization dedicated to getting more people safely on bicycles. 

 

April 2024 - Seniors Seminar and Social Series

Free Yoga Class | Tuesday May 30 | 12:30-1:30pm

This free Yoga Nidra Class will finish off the programming for Mental Health Awareness Month in May. This drop-in class is available to participants of all levels and will have an importance on the taking action towards mental health. Yoga Nidra is a gentle yoga class that focuses on profound physical, mental and emotional relaxation. Those who wish to participate are asked to bring a yoga mat. The class will take place in the Accursi Room of the Meridian Community Centre. No registration required. Refreshments and a social will follow.

Niagara Christian Gleaners Presentation | Wednesday June 7 | 1:30-3:00pm

The Niagara Christian Gleaners are a non-for-profit volunteer led organization that uses surplus produce received from local growers to help feed the hungry across the world. This presentation will focus on the amazing work the Gleaners achieve, with a focus on the importance of their volunteers! This event will take place in the Accursi Room of the Meridian Community Centre and will include snacks and refreshments.

Community Support Services of Niagara Presentation (CSSN) | Wednesday, July 19th | 1:30-3:30pm 

Community Support Services of Niagara is a volunteer based not-for-profit agency providing comprehensive client-driven community support services to help seniors and adults with disabilities live independently in their own homes. CSSN staff feel that their daily work is meaningful, impacts those in the community and allows their clients to live their lives to the fullest. Join Cherie Dellagatta to talk about the variety of services and supports that are available all over the Niagara Region. This event will take place in the Accursi Room of the Meridian Community Centre and will include snacks and refreshments.

The Ontario Caregiver Organization | Thursday, August 24th | 1:30pm-3:30pm

Caregivers play an invaluable role in our healthcare system and communities, providing an estimated three quarters of care in Ontario. The Ontario Caregiver Organization (OCO) exists to support Ontario’s 4 million caregivers; ordinary people who provide physical and emotional support to a family member, partner, friend or neighbour. Join Katie Muirhead, Regional Lead from the Ontario Caregiver Organization to learn more about the impact on caregivers across Ontario, the history and evolution of the Ontario Caregiver Organization and the no cost programs and services that are offered to caregivers. This event will take place in the Accursi Room of the Meridian Community Centre and will include snacks and refreshments.

Osteoporosis Canada | Tuesday, September 12th | 1:30pm-4:00pm

Osteoporosis Canada works to educate, empower and support individuals and communities on bone health and in the risk-education and treatment of Osteoporosis. As osteoporosis is a disease that slowly, quietly weakens bones and often goes undiagnosed - it is important to recognize its leading factors. Join us to learn about all things related to your important bone health, followed by a movement mechanics workshop! This event will take place in the Accursi Room of the Meridian Community Centre and will include a light snacks and refreshments.

Join Anne Cooke, who is an instructor, trainer, presenter, business owner, fitness director and educator of senior fitness instructors,  after the seminar for an active movement session that reviews ways to sit, stand, walk and exercise with osteoporosis. Learn spine sparing movements when doing housework, gardening and other activities of daily living. Understand the importance of good posture, joint mobility and alignment as it affects bone health. Using some fun toys and tools like balls, sticks, cones and walking poles it will be an educational and fun workshop! Participate or spectate. Chairs are provided. All free and all welcome!

Lincoln Pelham Public Library | Thursday, October 19th | 11:30am-1:00pm

The Lincoln Pelham Public Library will be coming in to share about their many services, supports, and programming that are available for the older adult community. Join Susan DiBattista, Director of Community Engagement, to learn about these services and celebrate Canadian Library Month! This event will take place in the Accursi Room of the Meridian Community Centre and will include snacks and refreshments.

 

Seniors Fraud Prevention Seminar Series
November: Be Aware... Take Care: A Safety Guide for our Community | Wednesday, November 15th, 2023 | 1:00-3:00pm

Learn about the "Be Aware Take Care" initiative with the Niagara Elder Abuse Prevention Network. This seminar provides information, guidance, and resources on protecting yourself online and offline. 

This event will take place in the Accursi Room of the Meridian Community Centre and will include lunch and refreshments.

The funding to support the Seniors Fraud Prevention Seminar Series is provided through the Seniors Community Grant Program. The Seniors Community Grant Program is a provincial grant that helps support community organizations' ability to provide opportunities for greater social inclusion, volunteerism and community engagement for older adults.

Eat Well for Life, Registered Dietitian Presentation | Thursday, November 16th, 2023 | 1:30-3:30pm

Join Christina Dupont, Registered Dietitian, Certified Diabetes Educator and owner of Eat Well for Life - Registered Dietitian Services, to learn about all things healthy eating and proper nutrition. Christina has a background in working with a variety of medical condition managements, such as diabetes management, cardiovascular health and digestive health, as well as having extensive experience working with adults and older adults with various other medical conditions. Christina has a passion for teaching others and helping clients follow through with dietary change through focusing on meal planning. This event will take place in the Accursi Room of the Meridian Community Centre and will include healthy snacks and refreshments.

Intergenerational Wreath-Making Workshop | Sunday December 3, 2023 | 10:00am-12:00pm, 1:00-3:00pm & 4:00-6:00pm

Register to reserve your space in the festive wreath-making workshop led by Marian from Rice Road Greenhouses. Family and friends of all ages are welcome to attend! Have fun expressing your creativity with this interactive workshop. This will take place at the Meridian Community Centre. Coffee, refreshments and all wreath-making materials will be provided.

Fraud Prevention Seminars

From December of 2023 until March of 2024 the Town of Pelham offered a monthly fraud prevention seminar series.  Topics including Cyber Safety & Security, identity scams, banking scams and tips of fraud prevention.

 

Fraud booklets are available at the Meridian Community Centre. A digital version with translations available can be viewed here.

The Town of Pelham is helping to keep you active and social with daily virtual programs through Art Your Service! Virtual Programs include Pilates, painting, dance, yoga, Zumba, lectures, book talks, sewing projects, cooking, music lessons and more!
