FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 24, 2023
Pelham, ON – Earth Week in Pelham from April 17-22, 2023 will focus on green initiatives within the community that include a clean-up day and the return of the community rain barrel program and eco-expo.
"The rain barrel program is back in 2023 after seeing such an exciting response from the community during earth week last year! There are many ways that residents can get involved in earth week and make small changes that can positively impact the environment,” said Town of Pelham, Director of Recreation, Culture and Wellness Vickie vanRavenswaay. “Earth week is a great opportunity for the community to renew a focus on going green.”
Part of the "Go Green" events include an opportunity for Pelham residents to purchase subsidized rain barrels. Rain barrels can be used to catch chlorine-free water from property downspouts and are an eco-friendly way for seasonal watering for gardens and landscaping. With a limit of two per Pelham household, 324 barrels are available for pre-order at the reduced rate of $40.00. The pre-purchased barrels will be available for pick up on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at the Meridian Community Centre during the community eco-event and the kick-off of the community clean-up.
The one-day Pelham community clean-up invites area residents to Pitch-in and volunteer to assist in removing litter from neighbourhood streets, parks, and playgrounds on April 22, 2023. Registered participants in the community clean-up will receive supplies to assist their efforts and are invited to register in advance.
Returning this year is the Pelham Earth Week Challenge offered on the free app GooseChase, with support from Niagara Economic Development. From April 17-22, 2023, the digital scavenger hunt style event will have activities and challenges for participants of all ages to complete. Earth week challenges will focus on environmentally friendly activities, and it is free for participants to join. All participants who complete a minimum of one challenge will be entered to win an eco-prize pack.
