FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 26, 2017
Pelham, ON – Pelham residents are invited to help plant six trees in Woodstream Park on Friday, April 28, in celebration of Arbour Day, the globally recognized initiative that promotes the growth and caring of trees.
This year’s free community event is hosted in conjunction with Forests Ontario, Ontario’s Green Leaf Challenge and Ontario Wood and will take place from 1-3 p.m. All residents are invited to enjoy the family-friendly event and are asked to bring a shovel and gardening gloves; trees, forestry specialists, mulch, and snacks will be provided.
Arbour Day provides an opportunity for communities to contribute to a project that offers vast environmental benefits for the local and global community. By participating in this event, Pelham residents will be building awareness around the importance of trees, which clean our air, improve water supplies, foster wildlife habitats, contribute to human health, and provide a buffer against the effects of climate change.
“This is our first time hosting a community tree planting event in partnership with Forests Ontario,” said Jodi Hendriks, culture & community enhancement programmer. “This initiative gives us an opportunity to start giving back after many trees were infected by the emerald ash borer and were taken out of our parks and surrounding community; we’ll be planting three Bur Oak and three Scarlet Oak.”
Parking for the Arbour Day activities will be available at the Pelham arena. Space for this event is limited, so those wishing to participate should pre-register.
The event will proceed, rain or shine, so participants are reminded to dress for the weather and to consider bringing appropriate outdoor clothing, sturdy shoes (steel toe if possible), a hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent.
