Pelham Mayor Dave Augustyn, Niagara Centre MP Vance Badawey, and Niagara West MP Dean Allison were onsite to announce funding of up to $69,600 by the Government of Canada through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP150) for the Marlene Stewart Streit Park Pool on Friday, May 12, 2017.
With the CIP150 funding, the facility will receive assistance in performing critical repairs that will extend its useful life.
The project will result in improved energy efficiency and decreased operational costs by providing funds to assist in the following repairs:
- Sandblast and repair pool bowl
- Remove and re-set pool deck with suitable no-slip surface
- Replace asphalt viewing area with concrete surface; repair/replace existing curbs/stairs in same area
- Replace pool house lighting panel
- Trace and repair leak from weeping tile discharge
These repairs provide greater safety features and an enhanced usability for all of the Town’s residents and surrounding communities to enjoy.
“We are thankful for this funded project; it further solidifies the investments being made in Pelham,” said Augustyn. “The pool is a summertime hub and we are very excited to create a more enjoyable community experience.”
As the Town’s only community pool the facility receives steady traffic, welcoming nearly 10,000 visitors during the summer season. In addition to the general public attendance, there are more than 900 swim lessons taught in the pool each year.
“The Marlene Stewart Streit Park Pool offers important recreational and physical fitness opportunities for the citizens of Pelham,” said MP Badawey. “The Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program allows for important projects and facilities to be supported and improved so that they can be enjoyed for generations to come.”
“This funding will assist in updating and repairing a much used community facility,” said MP Dean Allison. “The Marlene Stewart Streit Park and the pool is where many of Pelham’s residents spend hours of quality family time each summer.”
CIP150 investments honour Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation and will help create jobs, boost economic activity, strengthen communities and celebrate Canada’s rich heritage and history. In Southern Ontario, CIP150 is delivered by the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario.
