National Drowning Prevention Week in Canada
July 16-22, 2017
WHEREAS, the Lifesaving Society designates the third week in July as National Drowning Prevention Week (NDPW) to focus community and media attention on the drowning problem and drowning prevention; and
WHEREAS, NDPW provides a focus around which community Water Smart educators can plan news releases, do television and radio interviews, and deliver public demonstrations and other events; and
WHEREAS, nearly 500 fatalities annually, drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional death among Canadians under 60 years of age; and
NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor Dave Augustyn, do hereby proclaim and declare that the week of July 16-22, 2017 to be “National Drowning Prevention Week” in the Municipality of the Town of Pelham, to focus on the drowning problem and the lives that may be saved this year.
