After weeks of hot, dry and humid weather conditions, the Town of Pelham has lifted the open air burning ban in place since June 24, 2016.
On Tuesday, August 16, 2016, Pelham Fire Chief Bob Lymburner lifted the open air burning ban because rainfall amounts have sufficiently eliminated the risk of fires burning out of control and quickly spreading to nearby grass and plants. On Monday, Niagara Public Health also lifted the most recent Heat Alert issued for the region.
“Pelham’s open air burning ban was in effect until now for public safety,” said Fire Chief Bob Lymburner. “We appreciate property owners complying with the ban and working with the Fire Department to ensure no significant damage occurred.”
The ban prohibited all open air burning, such as cooking fires, fireworks, sparklers, and other types of outdoor burning. Open air burning and cooking fires are now permissible again, however Fire Chief Lymburner cautions, “Fires must be supervised at all times and residents must have a way of putting them out if needed.”
Fireworks can only be set off on specific days and holidays in Pelham. For details visit pelham.ca/fireworks.
All Niagara municipalities have had similar bans in place during what Environment Canada has called the region’s driest summer since 1934.
