Pelham elementary school students in grades four to eight are in for a treat! The E.L. Crossley Drama Department is putting on a play to teach them about fire safety.
Saskia Holditch, Fire Prevention Officer with the Town of Pelham, approached the high school drama department to help develop an effective educational tool for elementary school students. “I wanted the message to come from a group the children looked up to so that it resonated better with them.”
To help gather inspirational stories for their play “On Fire”, E.L. Crossley drama students consulted the Town of Pelham Fire Department and welcomed guest speakers who experienced house fires first-hand.
“The students are excited to develop a fire safety play that is educational and entertaining,” said E.L. Crossley drama teacher Jen Benson. "This is a wonderful opportunity for them to use their creative writing skills and performance talents for a good cause," she added.
A preview performance for Seniors, Town of Pelham Council and the Media will take place on May 7, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. in Room 110 at E.L. Crossley Secondary School.
Students from public schools A.K. Wigg, Glynn A. Green and Pelham Centre will enjoy two performances each from May 8-24, 2013.
Town of Pelham Fire Chief Bob Lymburner commented, “Fire safety and prevention tips are important for everyone to know and it’s great that the drama students found a creative and constructive way to teach this lesson."
Everyone involved in the project is grateful to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 613 and the local RBC bank for pledging funds to the project. Without the support of these very important sponsors this educational initiative could not have happened.
A cheque presentation by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 613 is scheduled for Friday, April 12, 2013 at 11 a.m. in Room 110 at E.L. Crossley Secondary School.
