Farmers Market returns to action May 6
The Pelham Farmers Market, an essential service provider, will operate for the first time this year on Thursday, May 6, 2021, at a limited capacity. The Market continues operation every Thursday through October 7, from 4 p.m. until dusk.
“Safety and access to fresh local produce are of the utmost importance as we continue to operate the Farmers Market for the second year amid the ongoing pandemic,” said Leah Letford, special events and festivals programmer. “The local vendors are excited to provide their services again this year, and a farmers market is a great way to help support local.”
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Market has again adopted regulations to keep patrons safe while visiting vendors. These regulations have been approved by Niagara Public Health and are similar to those that were in place during last year’s Market.
This year, only 13 patrons may be in the market area at any given time (excluding vendors) to ensure physical distancing can be maintained. Patrons are to adhere to one-way traffic flow around the Market from the designated entrance and exit point.
Patrons to the Market can expect the following from their visit:
• All patrons are asked to please wear a face-covering at all times in a manner that covers
their mouth, nose, and chin, unless they are entitled to exceptions
• Access to sanitize their hands before entry to the Market
• No handling or sampling of food will be permitted, no onsite consumption
• Maintain a safe physical separation of two metres from other shoppers while in line and the
market area
• Follow the traffic-flow directions clearly marked out at the Market
• Exit the area when shopping is completed

In 2020 Council Approved the Gypsy Moth Management Policy S802-03 to address the periodic infestation of the European Gypsy Moth experienced in the Town of Pelham.
In the fall of 2020, through a competitive bid process, the Town of Pelham awarded a three-year contract to Lallemand Inc./BioForest (BioForest) to:
1) perform annual egg mass surveys,
2) prepare a detailed population assessment and forecast report, including management options,
3) develop aerial spray blocks in accordance with Policy S802-03,
4) coordinate an aerial spray program,
5) prepare an aerial spray summary report, and
6) implement a forest health volunteer program
The 2021 Operating Budget includes $150,000 for the Gypsy Moth treatment Program. The cost associated with the coordination of the areal spray program and implementation of a scaled-down forest health program is $39,000. Program communications costs are expected to be similar to 2020 at $5400. Based on preliminary pricing of $920/ha for urban aerial treatment, the remaining $105,600 will be utilized for the spraying of 114ha.
