Pelham, ON – The Town of Pelham will be hosting two upcoming events for National Indigenous Peoples Day and Canada Day with the support of a $10,000 grant from the Federal government through the Canadian Heritage Celebrate Canada Program.
On National Indigenous Peoples Day, which takes place on June 21, the Town of Pelham will offer opportunities for learning and reflection to recognize the rich history, heritage, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples across Canada. Residents are encouraged to wear orange and attend the flag-raising at 10:00 a.m. at Pelham Town Hall. Following the morning flag raising, the community is invited to experience a Story Walk in Peace Park or participate in the 11:00 a.m. drumming workshop at the Meridian Community Centre. On Thursday, June 20th, alongside the Pelham Summer Chill event and the first bandshell concert of the season, a pop-up Indigenous market will take place in Peace Park designed to showcase local Indigenous art and culture.
“With the support of the Celebrate Canada grant and the dedicated community volunteers who assist at events, Pelham is fortunate to enjoy these unique opportunities to celebrate together, ” said Town of Pelham Director of Recreation, Culture & Wellness Vickie vanRavenswaay.
On July 1, Pelham will celebrate with the Superhero and Princess Party in the Park. The grand parade begins at 4:00 p.m. and travels down Haist Street from A.K. Wigg Public School to Harold Black Park. The park will be the site of a welcome ceremony and be a hub for activities, including the Rotary Club of Fonthill children’s area, which opens at 3:00 p.m. and features bouncers and family activities. Other event features include food and artisan vendors, roaming entertainers and music. The Party in the Park event will end with the fireworks display at 10:00 p.m. Residents are encouraged to dress up in superhero and princess costumes while enjoying the event. In addition to the activities in the park, community members and youth are encouraged to enter contests, including a house decorating contest, colouring contest and bike decorating contest.
The Canadian Heritage Celebrate Canada program funds community-based activities celebrating and promoting National Indigenous Peoples Day and Canada Day. These celebrations enable Canadians to appreciate Canada’s rich cultural, ethnic, linguistic and geographic diversity and create opportunities for Canadians to participate in celebrations that create a sense of pride and belonging.
